Headache and Neck Pain – Causes And How To Treat Them

Quite often headaches and neck pain are mentioned together and they could occur at the same time. This is because many headaches could be caused by a stiff neck and in some cases, it also could be the other way round. However, the moot point is that headache and neck pain could be really a cause of concern. In most cases, it is very short-lived but even if it is there for a few days, it could make life quite difficult. It could impact day-to-day life and work. Productivity in factories and offices take a beating because of staff being on leave. They often take leave because of highly problematic and even debilitating neck pain and headache. Hence, it would be interesting to have a better perspective and understanding of these two pains that are often inter-connected like Siamese twins. We will also try and find out the remedies for the same.

Stiff Neck

Our neck is a complex structure and it is defined by seven vertebrae and these are referred to as the cervical spine. This is the top part of our spine. This certainly is complicated and has different working parts. These include ligaments, muscles, vertebrae, blood vessels, nerves, etc. They play a big role in supporting our head. When there is an injury or damage to the vertebrae, nerves or various other components of the neck, it could lead to a tension of the muscles. This could result in pain and depending on the severity of the injury, the pain could vary from mild to severe.

Headaches

A headache could be caused by a number of reasons and in most cases, it is caused by tensing up of the neck muscles. Tension headaches are also quite common these days and this could be because of the buildup of anxiety, stress, inadequate sleep and much more. All these lead to tightening of muscles at the base of the skull and the back of the neck. Tension headaches could range from mild to moderate and more often than not it could be like a band that is tightening around the head. There are many ways and means by which tension headaches could be remedied.

OTC painkillers are the most commonly used, first-line treatment for managing tension headaches. It could range from acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and diclofenac sodium amongst other choices. There are also many prescription painkillers as like indomethacin and naproxen that might be prescribed by doctors depending on the severity of the headache. Triptans are another group of drugs that are used for headaches caused by migraine and other related problems. Blood pressure medications, anticonvulsants, and anti-depressants are also prescribed by doctors.

Non Invasive Methods & Drug-Free Treatments

Apart from the above drugs, non-invasive and natural methods are also used. These include chiropractic solutions, acupuncture treatments in OKC, meditation, yoga, and even aromatherapy. While common headaches and neck pains can easily be remedied by the use of over-the-counter medications, if the pain does not subside after seven days, then it is advisable to check with the doctor and find out the main reason for the pain continuing beyond seven days. In such cases, unless the underlying cause is identified, it may not yield the right results.
